According to the BC Prosecution Service, there is not sufficient evidence to support contempt charges against Wet’suwet’en members arrested in January.
14 Wet’suwet’en band members were arrested on January 7th during an RCMP injunction enforcement at a Gidimt’en checkpoint.
In a statement submitted to the BC Supreme Court today, the Service says there is not enough evidence for a “substantial likelihood of conviction”.
Charges of criminal contempt which were levied against the band members are separate from Criminal Code charges relating to the same enforcement.
One charge of assaulting a police officer with a weapon was approved by the service against one of the individuals.
All 14 of the individuals were arrested while attempting to keep Coastal GasLink pipeline workers off of their traditional territory.
