Changes to the Workers Compensation Act will give wildfire and Indigenous firefighters and investigators easier access to injury and illness supports.
Under the new changes, the definition of presumptive illnesses will be expanded, adding access to mental health supports, and expanding cancer and heart disease presumptions.
Similar changes in 2018 had already expanded those definitions to cover police officers, paramedics, and urban firefighters.
Prior to 2018, illnesses and injuries had to first be proven to be related to job activity, and the definition of presumptive illnesses was very limited.
