British Columbia has nearly 200 unsolved and active cases involving unidentified human remains (UHR).
The BC Coroner’s Service is hoping a new interactive tool will generate leads that see the cases resolved.
The unidentified human remains viewer is a web-mapping application with information on every active, unsolved UHR case in the province.
The UHR interactive viewer was developed by Ian Charlton, a spatial information analyst with the BC Coroners Service’s Special Investigations Unit.
It provides a visual overview of where and when remains were found, the case numbers, and key information related to each unresolved case.
Most of the nearly 200 investigations involve cold cases, including one on the North Coast, two in the Terrace area, and one near Smithers.
The BC Coroner’s Service says it’s hoped that the new tool will help identify the remains and bring closure to their families.
The interactive viewer can be found here.
