Elevated levels of sulphur dioxide in Kitimat have triggered an alert.
The automated system first issued the alert at 1 p.m. Thursday when levels reached 36.7 pub at Riverlodge and the alert was continued at 2 p.m.
At 3 p.m., 1-hour SO2 levels for Kitimat Riverlodge reached 66.8 ppb, considered “moderate” by health officials.
The environment ministry recommends people with asthma consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities if experiencing symptoms.
The Kitimat SO2 Alert Pilot Project was put in place after public concern about increased sulphur dioxide emissions from Rio Tinto’s modernization project at its Kitimat smelter.
