Finance Minister Bill Morneau has announced his Liberal’s latest 5 year budget, which includes 4.5 billion dollars in Indigenous investments.
According to the Federal government, the investments will focus on narrowing the socio-economic gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents.
1.2 billion of that funding will go in to developing a long-term approach for Indigenous child services over the next 3 years based on the Jordan’s Principle.
A further 126.5 million dollars across the next 2 years will go towards establishing a national council on reconciliation.
That council will focus on helping to better understand and learn from the difficult past between Canada and its Indigenous Peoples.
This includes further adapting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations relating to residential schools.
