A five-day hearing which could define BC’s power over the transport of oil through the province begins today.
In a reference case being brought before the BC Court of Appeal, the province is asking whether it has jurisdiction to regulate and restrict the transport of oil from Alberta.
Specifically, the province references the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion and proposed Environmental Management Act amendments.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley say that only Ottawa has authority over cross-provincial pipelines.
But BC is arguing that they should have a say in order to be able to protect the environment and health of its communities.
