2.9 million dollars in fresh federal funding is going towards scientific research on southern resident killer whales.
Minister of Fisheries Jonathan Wilkinson announced the funding, which will be split between 3 universities, this weekend.
In BC, the University of British Columbia will receive a share of the money.
Killer whale populations have been a firm point of contention for those in opposition to the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project.
A recent NEB review highlighted the endangered ocean mammal as a key area of improvement if construction is to move forward on the project.
