With at least 2 deaths occurring in lockable donation bins in BC last year, one Prince George business is making a change.
AiMHi Prince George Association for Community Living is replacing their 39 outdoor cothing donation bins across the city with indoor, wire-frame replacements.
These new bins feature no lockable doors or mechanisms, making it impossible for anyone to get trapped inside.
Previous designs featured large, green bins, with a trap door style lid, and a gate mechanism to protect clothes.
During the colder months, the large outdoor bins offered an appealing source of warmth to the city’s less fortunate denizens.
In fact, AiMHi says that, while picking up one of the boxes, they already discovered two individuals sheltered inside.
AiMHi is looking to work with businesses hosting the bins to collaborate the swapping of the bins, and plans to open their new donation station on March 9th.
