Responding to last week’s throne speech, Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson says it’ll take more than just words to reach true reconciliation with First Nations.
In that speech, Premier John Horgan committed BC to becoming the first province to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in to legislation.
Simpson likened the process to the one his government has been undertaking with the Lhtako Dene First Nations since 2015.
Initial dialogue led to better recognition of the Nation in the community, but also to strong partnerships between the two.
Most recently, the city has supported an application by the Nation to build a cultural centre and, if successful, have agreed to restore ownership of the property to the Lhtako Dene.
