Job losses are coming to the northern B.C. forest sector next year as West Fraser Timber has announced planned production cuts.
West Fraser plans to eliminate the third shift at both its Fraser Lake And Quesnel sawmills, curtailing about 300 million board feet of production.
The company says approximately 60 workers at the Fraser Lake operation and 75 employees in Quesnel will be affected by the curtailments during the first and second quarter of 2019.
West Fraser says it expects to soften the blow by offering employees opportunities at other West Fraser operations.
The company says it making the cuts as it faces a well-documented timber supply shortage in B.C. due to the Mountain Pine Beetle infestation.
