Changes could be around the corner as to where Quesnel residents can drop off their recycling.
The City of Quesnel and Cariboo Regional District are looking at closing its current controlled drop-off locations while expanding the Recycle BC depot at the landfill which would be staffed, fenced, and monitored.
Officials say the contamination rates at the uncontrolled drop off depots are too high to create marketable products in the current global market.
Since China now only accepts the cleanest recyclable material, it makes marketing the contaminated paper and plastic from Quesnel’s current depots extremely challenging and costly.
Quesnel is the only Cariboo community with non-controlled recycling depots.
The City and CRD will be working with its current contractor and Recycle BC on the next steps.
The City of Quesnel has posted FAQ list on the proposed recycling changes.
