The government is taking steps to try and balance the scales of local elections.
An ammendment to the Local Election Campaign Financing Act was made today that will ensure union and corporate donations cannot be used to fund elector organizations during election years.
The changes, in effect as of today, recognize the difficulty in differentiating between operational and election expenses.
To counter this, the two will now be considered in the same pool.
This will attempt to eliminate loopholes which previously could allow corporations to donate large portions of money to campaigns.
The move is an attempt to level the playing field and remove ‘big money’ from elections.
